Small Appliances and Tools for the Grill Master/Outdoor Cook
It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without our Cajun Fried Turkey (check out this fun recipe made with leftovers) and you’ve got to have a cooker and a big cook pot. Once the cooker and pot are in your outdoor cooking repertoire, then you’ve got the basis for a low country boil too – another Southern staple of outdoor cooking/parties.
A cooker like the one below is a versatile outdoor cooking tool and it’s great to have around. Besides frying turkeys and making low country boils you can cook blackened fish outside and save your house from the smoke and smell.
Cook fish and hush puppies (maybe even a few french fries?) in a fryer like this. With a big pot of grits on the cooker above you’ve got a true southern tradition, right in your own backyard.
Our grill master advisors tell us that they’ve been through oodles of those inexpensive grill baskets and they just don’t hold up as well. They’ve finally come to the conclusion that investing in a good quality grill pan or basket is well worth it. This is perfect for grilling shrimp and onions like you’ll want to have for our Barbecue Shrimp Salad.
What self-respecting grill master would be without a good butt rub?
We prefer homemade, but if there’s just not time this is a great Basting Sauce. It keeps the meat moist as it cooks.
This sauce is made with Jack Daniels’ Whiskey, so it’s got to be good.
Our favorite seasoning blend, whether you’re cooking outdoors or in.
You’ll find lots of recipes here on Biscuits and Burlap where we use this blend. Shrimp and Grits is one of our most popular posts ever. Crab Cakes with Cajun Cream Sauce is another favorite. Homemade French Fries with Creole Aioli have it in the dipping sauce. See what we mean? We love this stuff!
Also from Tony Chachere’s is this Injectable Marinade. It’s the key for making your fried turkey come out perfectly every time.
Books that will make Great Gifts for the Grill Master or Outdoor Cook
Just for fun I thought I’d throw in a photo of smoking guru, Steven Raichlen and yours truly. Sara and I attended a cooking demonstration of his this summer. His book, Project Smoke, is featured above.
