The awesome town of Norcross, Georgia, has now had the third of its Community Markets, scheduled from 9am to 1pm each Saturday through August 13th, (except July 4th week). The first three weeks have seen a community of people and organizations coming together to bring the type of market the town’s people asked for. It makes me proud to live in a place where so many people can pull together and work toward a common goal.
Can’t you just see the joy on the faces of a few of the people who have made this dream a reality? This was the ribbon cutting at the first market on June 4th.
Now, feast your eyes on some of the vendors’ fresh produce. Each vendor is a local independent grower/owner.
Norcross Community Market is a creation of Sustainable Norcross, whose mission is “preserving our future by living smarter today”. The Market has partnered with, and is being sponsored by several organizations helping to fulfill this mission, including the partner market organizer,
The Georgia Farmers Market Association is working with the Norcross Community Market to create a Best Practices model for other markets all over the state of Georgia. The Project Generation Gap is yet another supporter and their focus is bridging the gap between generations, providing nutrition education, and supporting farming.
Through their partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia the Market is able to double the value of SNAP Dollars (formerly food stamps). What a great opportunity to give residents of the community access to fresh, locally grown food.
Besides food, the Norcross Community Market offers entertainment and just plain fun for the visitors. The market is set up around a green space, which offers is a perfect spot for games,
and live music
A few other vendors and their products/offerings are here for you to check out. Some will be at the market every Saturday and some are rotating with other vendors. Each Saturday will be a little bit different.
Pearson Farms Peaches, Yum!
The Norcross Community Market is fortunate in having the support of our host, the City of Norcross
as well as the Downtown Development Authority of Norcross, Georgia
The first Market featured Executive Chef Nona Johnson of the Sizzling Peach (and winner of Season 8 of Hell’s Kitchen) making pesto and spiralizing zucchini to make “Zucchini Spaghetti” (several of the ingredients coming from vendors at the market). I was lucky enough to get a sample — oh my goodness.
The second Saturday featured Audra of local favorite Chase’s Grille & Wingery and Audra made “Instant Pickles” and Watermelon Salad for our enjoyment. She also utilized produce from market vendors.
Yes, I was around for samples again. My timing is just impeccable, I guess. I can’t wait to see the cooking demonstrations for the rest of the community markets.
In addition to the vendors of food to take home there are ready to eat (and drink) offerings, including a rotation of food trucks. There are plenty of places to take a load off while you enjoy munching or take it with you while you stroll the booths.
You can bring your flags to the market any Saturday. Read more here.
KIDS (AND KIDS-AT-HEART) ACTIVITIES
Local organizations are providing activities for our younger visitors. Here Lionheart Theatre had all the supplies for making pine cone bird feeders.
Norcross United Methodist Church offered crafts and games for the younger set as well.
A few other events to look forward to:
On June 25th Norcross Presbyterian Church will be helping community market guests make prints to take home using vegetables and paints.
Also on June 25th Gwinnett Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions (for adults and budding young gardeners).
July 16 – Christmas in July with an appearance by Mr. and Mrs. Claus. There might even be a story or two told under the shade tent.
On July 30th Kaiser Permanente’s Performance Company will bring their Educational Theatre Program to the market for all ages to enjoy.
Lots more surprises are in store! Come to the community market every Saturday for consistently fresh, locally grown foods. Have some fun while learning how to make healthy choices and make the most of what is fresh and available on any given day. We can’t wait to see you, your families, clubs, church groups and other organizations continuing to enjoy the market.
