Ingredients

  • ¾ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon ground
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 5 Tablespoons butter cut into pieces or grated
  • 5 apples large, peeled and cut into ½ inch pieces
  • 1 cup berries fresh or frozen, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, or cranberries
  • ¾-1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon ground

Instructions

  • Spray or butter a 10 inch cast iron skillet (or casserole dish).
  • In a medium bowl, stir together ½ cup flour, oats, cinnamon, brown sugar and salt.
  • Add butter by grating or in small pieces and then cut in with pastry blender. Set aside.
  • Combine apples, sugar, remaining cinnamon and flour and mix well. Add berries last tossing gently. Pour into baking pan.
  • Sprinkle with topping and bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes or until topping is browned.
  • Let cool for 20-30 minutes. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes

  • If using frozen berries, thaw and drain them before adding to the recipe. This prevents excess moisture from making the crisp soggy.
  • The amount of sugar can vary depending on the sweetness of your fruit and personal preference. Taste the fruit mixture before adding sugar, and adjust accordingly.
  • When combining the dry ingredients for the topping (flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon, and salt), use a fork or pastry blender to cut the cold butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. This ensures a crumbly, crunchy topping.
  • Keep an eye on your crisp as it bakes. You want the crisp topping to be golden brown and the fruit to be bubbling. You may need to adjust the baking time based on your oven's performance.
  • Allow the apple crisp to cool for a bit after baking. This helps the fruit juices thicken and the flavors meld.
  • Make your apple berry crisp in a cast iron skillet for super crispy edges. Cast iron also holds the heat longer to keep it warm for serving.
